چکیده

Excitation of a Global Alfvén wave (GAW) is proposed as a viable mechanism to explain plasma heating in the magnetosphere of young stars. The wave and basic plasma parameters are compatible with the requirement that the dissipation length of GAWs be comparable to the distance between the shocked region at the star's surface and the truncation region in the accretion disk. A two-fluid magnetohydrodynamic plasma model is used in the analysis. A current carrying filament along magnetic field lines acts as a waveguide for the GAW. The current in the filament is driven by plasma waves along the magnetic field lines and/or by plasma crossing magnetic field lines in the truncated region of the disk of the accreting plasma. The conversion of a small fraction of the kinetic energy into GAW energy is sufficient to heat the plasma filament to observed temperatures.

R-Mode Oscillations and Spindown of Young Rotating Magnetic Neutron Stars

Recent work has shown that a young, rapidly rotating neutron star loses angular momentum to gravitational waves generated by unstable r-mode oscillations. We study the spin evolution of a young, magnetic neutron star including both the effects of gravitational radiation and magnetic braking (modeled as magnetic dipole radiation). Our phenomenological description of nonlinear r-modes is similar ...

The role of damped Alfvén waves on magnetospheric accretion models of young stars

We examine the role of Alfvén wave damping in heating the plasma in the magnetic funnels of magnetospheric accretion models of young stars. We study four different damping mechanisms of the Alfvén waves: nonlinear, turbulent, viscous-resistive and collisional. Two different possible origins for the Alfvén waves are discussed: 1) Alfvén waves generated at the surface of the star by the shock pro...

Excitation of Alfvén waves by modulated HF heating of the ionosphere, with application to FAST observations

During the operation of the EISCAT high power facility (heater) at Tromsø, Norway, on 8 October 1998, the FAST spacecraft made electric field and particle observations in the inner magnetosphere at 0.39 Earth radii above the heated ionospheric region. Measurements of the direct current electric field clearly exhibit oscillations with a frequency close to the modulated frequency of heater (∼ 3 H...

Nonlinear Alfvén waves, discontinuities, proton perpendicular acceleration, and magnetic holes/decreases in interplanetary space and the magnetosphere: intermediate shocks?

Alfvén waves, discontinuities, proton perpendicular acceleration and magnetic decreases (MDs) in interplanetary space are shown to be interrelated. Discontinuities are the phase-steepened edges of Alfvén waves. Magnetic decreases are caused by a diamagnetic effect from perpendicularly accelerated (to the magnetic field) protons. The ion acceleration is associated with the dissipation of phasest...

0 v 1 2 5 Ja n 20 07 Cutoff - Free Propagation of Torsional Alfvén Waves Along Thin Magnetic Flux Tubes

Propagation of torsional Alfvén waves along magnetic flux tubes has been extensively studied for many years but no conclusive results regarding the existence of a cutoff frequency for these waves have been obtained. The main purpose of this paper is to derive new wave equations that describe the propagation of linear torsional Alfvén waves along thin and isothermal magnetic flux tubes, and use ...
